The importance of talking about your mental health

It can be tough to talk about your mental health. Social pressures often make it feel like you have to “man up” and sort things out on your own, but ignoring the problem doesn’t make it go away. In fact, untreated mental health struggles can lead to dangerous behaviours like substance misuse, gambling, and addiction. Unresolved emotions can also affect your ability to connect with others, perform well at work, or fully engage with your family – and in some cases, can lead to thoughts of suicide.

Did you know?

  • 1 in 8 men experience common mental health problems
  • 63% of men feel more comfortable talking about their mental health over a drink
  • 39% of men have had a disappointing or unhelpful response when they tried to talk about their mental health

These statistics show how common mental health struggles are for men and highlight the urgent need to break the stigma around seeking help. The reality is, you don’t have to face this alone.

Breaking the stigma

Mental health challenges are not something you should have to go through in silence. Talking about it, whether with a friend or a professional, is the first step toward feeling better.
